SUMMARY:Breakfast with Emilie Ringe
DESCRIPTION:Professor Emilie Ringe is an assistant professor of Materials Science and Nanoengineering\, as well as an assistant professor of  Chemistry at Rice University. She earned her B.A./M.S. (summa cum laude) as well as her Ph.D. from Northwestern University where she held a Presidential Fellowship. Then\, Prof. RInge completed a research fellowship at the University of Cambridge before taking a professorship at Rice University. A central theme of Prof. Ringe’s research is to use and develop atomic resolution structure and composition analysis tools in order to unravel properties of catalytic and plasmonic nanomaterials.  In particular\, her group focuses on identifying and characterizing the structural and compositional features of multicomponent nanomaterials. These are critical to control sensing\, plasmonic light localization\, and catalysis. Their aim is to to develop new functional nanomaterials for monitoring and controlling reactions on the nanoscale.  Check out her website here. \nRSVP here.

SUMMARY:Breakfast with Iwona Jasiuk
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy breakfast and the opportunity to talk with Iwona Jasuik before the seminar on Monday.  Professor Jasiuk develops research-based models to explain the structure and behavior of man-made and biological materials. Her work with man-made materials aims at understanding why the properties of composites made with nano-sized particles differ from those made with micro-sized particles. She is particularly interested in the interface that surrounds such particles and comes into contact with the surrounding material\, and how this interface contributes to the shape\, size and boundary conditions of composites as a whole.  Her work with biological materials has focused on bone.  She has done research on why osteoporotic bones break and limb regeneration.  Jasuik is also the recipient of numerous awards and a member of many societies.  Check out her website here.
